Quilts and quilting are a tradition I am proud to help preserve. A quilt's most simple definition is two layers of cloth with a batting layer between them, stitched together through and through. Yet every quilt transcends that definition; it is the artistic expression of the person making it and part of the life memory of the person who uses it.

I quilt on a Gammill long arm quilting machine, fourteen feet long, six feet wide, with a traveling head that I can maneuver around the quilt, sewing patterns in specific places or covering the quilt top from side to side with a pattern.

Handspun wool yarn is my fiber of choice for classic knitted garments: sweaters, socks, mittens, gloves and hats. My yarn starts with fleece of local flocks of sheep. I sort and wash it, and dye some of it. I send it to a carding mill, and spin it into yarn when it comes back.

I taught myself to spin long even before I became a weaver, and now I spin on an electric wheel I designed and had built. It's not much faster, since the yarn is still formed in my hand, but my knees are so happy to have quit treadling.
