Its been 23 years since we first put our key in the lock of the old red building on Mill Street in the Village of Peninsula. At that time, there were many vacant buildings, the towpath trail wasnt finished, the road was a lane and a half of ruts, and the train had a variable schedule. We didnt know much about this place, located in the Valley, by the river called Cuyahoga, but we did know that it felt right. So we moved our business to this community and became part of it, coming back each day.

Places, like people, have personalities. Folks in this Village care for each other. They rejoice in weddings and births, and grieve the communitys losses. The churches steeples punctuate the horizon of this place, and provide a place for people to celebrate their faiths.

Peninsula is a verb. Residents, businesses and museums have lovingly restored century old buildings and their grounds. The Peninsula Home and Garden Club, meeting continuously since 1935, takes care of flowers, flags and decorations on the Main Street bridge. The Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce plans events and festivals, and helps keep the business community vibrant.

The Village of Peninsula, population 602, is a rather unique place. It celebrates its past and embraces its future. We are grateful to be part of it.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE STUDIO

Once again, Steve and I have been working collaboratively on some pieces. I carved the design on this piece that Steve threw. We have a nice selection of these items in the Gallery.

Working collaboratively is an interesting process; it involves letting go of any preconceived notions of how a piece should evolve. Not a bad thing on which to work.

This is one of Steve's new bowls that shows some of the new, wonderful glazes with which we've been working. The layering and swirling of the glazes are luminous and reflect the light in a magical way.

We are pleased to once again show you the fine wooden toys by the fine folks from North Star Toys. Connie, Timothy and their daughters have been crafting these toys, made from hard woods and finished with non-toxic oils, since 1979. We had carried these heirloom quality toys when our daughters were young, and and are happy to share them with you again.

We have known becky monegan since our young adult daughters were 3 years old. Becky lives in the Valley, and her weaving incorporates the colors and textures of this beautiful place. Becky's mug mats and a variety of table mats, both vibrant and subtle, are available for you to enhance your home or to give as gifts.

We are delighted to introduce Molly Aubuchon's work to you. Molly is a Kent based glass artist whose lamp-worked glass plant sticks, beverage stirrers, jewelry and her slumped glass plates reflect her interest in color, form and texture.

While she was a business and finance major at Kent State University, Molly started to work with glass as a creative outlet. "I love glass. I love the way it looks and I love the way it feels," she says. Molly's passion for her medium is evident in her fine work. Stop in and take a look.

Music on the Porches is coming on Saturday, September 29th. Not only will there be great music, but we will also be celebrating the art of local food, and fine craft. Introducing healthy, vibrant food created by Thrive.

Thrive is a partnership between Kent residents Molly Aubuchon and Kelly Ferry. Using fresh, local ingredients, Kelly and Molly are committed to supporting local farms and to building the local food economy.

We have enjoyed their nori rolls, cookies, puddings, salads and snacks, and are excited to share them with you.

11:00 am-2:30 p.m.:
Purchase your food, created by Thrive, outside Elements Gallery, and head across Mill Street to the Peninsula Art Academy for beverages and frozen fruit bars by Kool Things. Sit outside and enjoy the music.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND THE VILLAGE

The music community is alive and well in the Village of Peninsula. We have enjoyed the new musical programs that the Peninsula Valley Historic and Education Foundation has developed. Each Friday, from 5:00-8:00 p.m., the G.A.R. Hall is the place for fine local music, food and drink and good company. Open Mic is the third Thursday of each month, from 7:30 until it's done. There are so many fine local musicians who share their talents in the beautifully restored G.A.R. Hall.
